My wife and I took our kids on what we thought was going to be a short hike. Turns out it was a bit longer than we expected. Thankfully, our kids were up for it (even the 7 year old rocked the 7+ mile trek). Reminded me of running a business. It’s important to pay attention to where you’re going, having a plan, and being willing to adjust when needed.

So, my wife and I decided to pack up the kids and go out on a hike. Figured that would be a fun way to spend a Saturday. And so we came out to Herb Parsons Park just outside of Memphis. That’s the first time we’ve been out here, other than just coming to the lake periodically. But anyway, a good lesson. You know I’m a strategy guy. And so I like to look at the big picture and kind of have an idea of where we’re going and all that kind of stuff. And so, I’m just reminded that, when it comes to business, when it comes to marketing, things like that, it’s good to have a strategy. It’s good to have an idea of where you’re going. And so, there’s three trails out here, and we just headed out on the Green Trail, and we knew it would go around the lake. But I didn’t look to see how far it went. And so, it turns out it’s about a seven-mile hike, and we’ve got four kids with us and they’re troopers, they’re rock stars. They’re doing great. And so, anyway, I just thought I’d share, just a funny little life lesson.

Just a good reminder, pay attention to where you’re going, as to how far you think it’s going to be, so you can make sure you’re ready for it. And thankfully, we packed some extra snacks and we had enough water with us and all that good stuff. But just yeah, when you think about your business, pay attention to where you’re going. You’re going to have to make adjustments. Maybe you have to go down a different trail than what you thought you were going to have to go down. But yeah, pay attention to the trail markers. And try to get an idea of how far you’re going to have to go. And make sure you’re ready for it. And sometimes, we don’t have control over that. Sometimes we don’t know, we just have to adjust and see what the adventure brings us. So anyway, just thought I’d share that. Thought that was a funny story, and maybe you’d get something useful from that.
